Photos of The Hurricane of 1938

The hurricane of September 21, 1938 hit Leominster at 4 p.m. 2,500 homes were damaged, church spires toppled, factory floors caved in. One third of the shade trees were uprooted. 800 electric and telephone poles were downed...(from http://members.aol.com/Leominster476/History.html)

IN THESE PHOTOS you can see that Whalom Park was not spared; in fact the damage was so extensive the park literally had to be rebuilt from scratch. Note that you can see the original 1924 'Shooting Star' wooden roller coaster that was replaced in 1939 by the Flyer Comet. Photos graciously donated by Catherine D. Perkins.
